Obscure Comics Characters #1

So, we’re starting a new column here to highlight obscure characters and villains that should either get more comics, or should be lost and forgotten forever.

In our first edition of this column, we’ll be taking a look at a one time interdimensional DC Comics villain Tyannosaurus Reich!

He appeared for the first and only time in a comic called Major Bummer #5. It appears to have been a funny book that lasted only 15 issues in the late ’90s. It was written by John Arcudi (who writes BPRD with Mike Mignola now) and drawn by Dough Mahnke (who’s done some good work on Batman I liked looking at).

The story centered around two Alien college students doing a thesis on Earth culture and decided to grant an earthling superpowers for some reason. They picked a philanthropist lawer, but confused his name with a burnout slacker. Comedy ensues.

In issue #5, a rift to a parallel universe is opened, allowing Tyrannosaurus Reich to come through. For a few pages he wreaks havoc, but is frightened by one of Major Bummer’s menagerie, a housecat who grows in size when it’s frightened.

He was put back in the portal and never to be seen again in the DC universe. Personally, I think it’s time he came back. Nazi dinosaurs are always of interest to me. (Remember the Nazi Velociraptors in Frank Cho’s Shanna the She-Devil? That was bad-ass.)
