DRAGON CON: Lucy Lawless

Lucy Lawless, undoubtedly best known as the Warrior Princess Xena and more recently as Lucretia in the popular Starz series Spartacus, is here at Dragon Con meeting fans and signing autographs at her first Dragon Con.  It was a joy to discover she’s amiable and so very down to earth. There is nothing to indicate she possesses the ability to throw a chakram at your head.

She spoke about the new project she’s working on, titled Code, which takes place in the Outback, and filming is scheduled to begin very soon. It’s a medical thriller mini series, and Lawless plays a teacher, “a fish out of water, and is trying to protect an indigenous boy who is in very hot water. She’s his best friend.”

As part of her Dragon Con duties, she and Spartacus co-star Liam McIntyre participated in the Dragon Con/Atlanta Braves baseball game Thursday night. Of the game she said, “I really liked it . . . I come from a country where you sit for five days and watch cricket . . . it was exciting.  It was a good game.”

I asked her which of the scenes from Spartacus she found the most difficult to shoot, and she responded “Oh undoubtedly anything with nudity.  I don’t like it, it’s counterintuitive to take your clothes off.  Especially in front of people you shot Xena with . . . .they’re like you’re brothers.”

Rather than a direct question and answer session, the interaction became more a conversation between her and reporters. She asked if we had stayed up late partying, and she wanted to know more about the convention.

She asked if furry parties really took place at Dragon Con. She’d heard about them and wondered if it was something that really occurred.

“And it is true they have like furry parties? . . . I didn’t think that was really a word . . . I need to see this!  . . . What goes on at a furry party has to be more interesting than a zombie party.  This is hysterical!” Her gleeful interest in the mysterious world of the furries was a sight to behold. And, she even tweeted about it.

She also requested a program to find out when the cast of Adventure Time would be available, since her kids are crazy about the show. It’s always fun to see the celebrity guests just as excited about the convention as fans. Unfortunately, running to the Adventure Time panel resulted in a calf injury, but in true Warrior Princess fashion, she was back signing autographs and talking to her fans.
