INTERVIEW: Ray Park

Ray Park, the guy who played Darth Maul appeared at Comic Con this weekend and talked about his movie career and did this Q&A. We found out a lot about him, like that he’s a big Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Chan fan.

What Martial Arts have you mastered?

Ray Park: Mostly Shaolin Kung Fu like my hero Jet Li, Wushu and Boxing, I love shadow boxing it makes you think you’re really tough and cool when you’re not.

How did you feel about how Darth Maul died?

RP: I was gutted… We talked about a spin off called the “The quest for legs” you see Maul gets a hoverboard for his torso and moves around by using his double Lightsaber as a canoe paddle. It’s all about him getting revenge on Obi-wan. [starts breaking down laughing from his own explanation]

Can you tell me if this is true, a rumor has been going around that in New York a gang tried to mug you and you promptly ended their lives.

RP: Ha ha, no… If there is any confrontation I am the first person to run. I think in school when I got into a fights I did a Wha… yell then a fancy kick and then ran away as fast as I could.

Who was your favorite character to play?

RP:  When I show up to work I’m just happy I’m working. But playing big movie characters that people remember is always fun, but I loved playing Edgar in Heroes.

How did you get the Star Wars job?

RP: I had some connections from with Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, that carried over. After I started working Lucas said this kid is going to be my bad guy, I was only 22 back then.

For playing bad guys most of the time, Ray Park, is one of the most lighthearted fun loving guys I’ve seen all weekend.
