Video Game Quick Hits 11/15/13

Yaaaaawwnn! Why am I so tired? Oh yeah, because I’m old and don’t stay out late anymore. But I did last night so I could pick up my PlayStation 4 at midnight. We’re getting right to the news so I can get back to Knack!

Amazon.com will now be selling PSN digital content

I don’t really know what to make of this or why it’s happening, but it’s definitely a thing. Amazon.com will now be selling PSN digital content, including full games and DLC add-ons. From what I understand, you will use your Amazon account to buy a digital item, let’s say Battlefield 4. You’ll then instantly receive a code for redemption on PSN. Use that code and you’ll start downloading Battlefield 4. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just go to the PSN store and buy it directly. The only use for this I can see is giving gifts. If you want to gift someone digital only content, Hotline Miami for example, this makes for a good option. The only other benefit I see is if Amazon provides discounts that Sony doesn’t. But why would Sony make such an arrangement? They’d be building their own competitor. There is a $5 PSN credit for a limited time by buying select digital games through Amazon. Here’s the link.

Got an XBox One reserved at Gamestop? Planning to trade in some old equipment to pay for it? The day to do that is Sunday, November 17th. That one day only, you can trade your current hardware for an extra 90% in store credit! That means you’re nearly doubling the trade value of your old console. Before and after Sunday you’ll get an extra 30% trade.

If your plan was to use that new XBox One to play LEGO Marvel Super Heroes you will be sadly disappointed with a delay. The game is currently available on PS Vita, Nintendo DS, WiiU, PS3, XBox 360, and PS4. Unfortunately, while it “is coming to next gen consoles… the game will not be releasing on the Xbox One on November 22.  [Warner Bros.] will provide a release date for LEGO Marvel Super Heroes on Xbox One as soon as possible.” Sad really. I’ve played it on PS3 and plan to complete it again on PS4. It’s a great game that narrowly missed my top ten games of the generation.

Rayman Legends is a game that has received high accolades for being gorgeous. Ubisoft has confirmed that you can expect even more beauty from it. It’s coming to PS4 and XB1 in February 2014.

Monolith is not looking to let the Lord of the Rings franchise sit idle for long. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor will be a third-person action game with a “vengeance and redemption” story. The player will take the role of Talion, a Tolkien version of Ghost Rider that’s been resurrected by the spirit of vengeance. The key bullet point for this entry is the Nemesis System:

Every enemy that players face is a unique individual, differentiated by their personality, strengths and weaknesses. Through the Nemesis System, enemy relationships and characteristics are shaped by player actions and decisions to create personal archenemies that remember and adapt to the player and are distinct to every gameplay session,” reads the press release.

Gamers are able to craft their own battles, enemies and rewards within the dynamic world that remembers and adapts to their choices, delivering a unique experience to every player.

It is planned for current and next-gen consoles, though a release date is still pending.

Hideo Kojima has revealed via Twitter that Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will have exclusive content for Sony consoles. No details yet, but the original PlayStation was the home of the first Solid title in the franchise and it’s no secret that Kojima enjoys his relationship with Sony. If you’re trying to sort out the time line he also has some extra hints. Ground Zeroes is a “prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.” It “takes place in 1975 after Peace Walker and nine years before The Phantom Pain.”

Taking a play from Microsoft, Sony has been taken by surprise that a feature on their PlayStation 4 isn’t popular with fans. There has been some complaining from customers that lack of support for mp3 and audio CD playback is unacceptable, and Music Unlimited is simply not a valid substitute. Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida admitted they were “caught off guard” by the response. His response to GiantBomb indicates they were always planning on incorporating these features, as well as DLNA network support, but that they weren’t being included on day one. The fan reaction has led Yoshida to light a fire under the relevant teams to include the features through a post-launch update. On a related note, you may have also heard that the PS4 will not include 3D Blu-ray playback. That is also being fixed with a patch, but much sooner. As in it’s part of the day one update to firmware 1.50 available now.

A European online retailer has listed a PlayStation 4 bundle that includes Sucker Punch’s inFamous Second Son. According to the posting it will release Friday, February 7, 2014. This is typical for European releases and would indicate, if true, that the game should release in the US on February 2nd. The game was previously announced for February release but we have no  confirmed date from Sony or Sucker Punch.

That’s all for today. Sure, there’s more news, but it can wait until Tuesday. Resogun (free with PS+) can’t.
