FIVE & THREE: My Favorite Things In Comics This Week

Some weeks are better than others, that is just a simple fact of life. From the looks of the covers, this week is a terrific one for comics, even though I haven’t had the chance to dig into them yet. So, because I can’t share with you my favorite moments this week, here’s a look at the covers I absolutely loved. I had some help picking them out this week, as in some of the past weeks. My wife is just as big a geek as I am and she has an eye for great art. Here is what we both thought were the best covers, and until I’ve read my books, these are my favorite things in comics this week.

Batman Black and White issue #4 makes it into 5 and 3 yet again. The books are simply outstanding. This cover is by Amanda Connor. The blending of negative and positive space to give shape to the woman’s body, hair, and what looks like blood is created perfectly by Amanda who is certainly a master at the top of her craft.

I picked another Real West because they just stand out while I’m browsing through the new books on Comixology. It doesn’t hurt that each Real West book has been a blast to read too.

This pick is Astro City issue 7. Do I really need to say any more? Who doesn’t like an Alex Ross cover? Come to think of it, why haven’t I include one of his covers from the books over at Dynamite? Just expect that to happen in the future, because it’s going to.

Dead Body Road is another new creator-owned comic book from Image Comics. The cover looks like the title sequence to a summer blockbuster. Knowing Hollywood though, that wouldn’t surprise me a bit if it eventually happens.

Ryan Ottley’s pencils and inks combined with John Rauch’s colors are outstanding right?

The cover to Batgirl 26 was so enticing that I’m going to pick up the issue and give it a spin. I don’t even care that it’s the last issue in the recent storyline or that I haven’t really followed Batgirl outside of what fellow bot Androidika has told me. Speaking of which, you should go follow Androidika on Twitter right now. He tweets as @MrMiah and always has something interesting to say.

My wife is the one who picked out The Maxx: Maxximized issue 2. I completely missed it but after she pointed it out, I’m going to pick it up and put it up on the wall. Four dollars is a really inexpensive price point for a work of art.

The last one I’ve picked this week goes with a dedication to my little nephew Nicolas. That yellow brick road goes to some fantastical places, and each one is an adventure. Not every road is happy when you’re walking it; but, the stories you’ll bring back with you, and the time spent with the people you care about, is all you’ll ever think matters. Skottie Young – though my own synchronicity – has captured my week perfectly.
