Box Office Monday

Ben Stiller and Leo DiCaprio couldn’t take down Tolkien, kind of. If we count from Christmas day, “The Wolf of Wall Street” would have beaten Smaug by $5 Million and Walter Mitty would have come in at 3rd place between “Frozen” and Anchorman. However, just going off the weekend they came in at 5th place and 7th place. The other Christmas openers all bombed. “47 Ronin” made just under $10 million ($20 with xmas) while “Grudge Match” did even worse at $7 Million ($13.4 with xmas).

  1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: $29.8 with a very small drop from last weekend. It only beat the #2 spot by $1 Million.
  2. Frozen: Killing it with a 47% jump from last week. $28.8 million in it’s 5th week of wide release. Obviously this is what families saw over the Christmas break.
  3. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues: At $20.1 million and a 25% drop, it’s still doing ok. Not bad, not great.
  4. American Hustle: $19.5 million in second week of wide release and up a little from last week. It has already made $60 million and if David O. Russel’s last 2 films are any indication this one will stick around a bit.
  5. The Wolf of Wall Street: $18.5 million. Not the strongest release but really who is going to watch a 3 hour movie about drugged up Wall Street assholes over Christmas?
