Rodarte’s 2014 Fall/Winter Runway

Do any of you have that Thing? You know, the Thing that you love that even other nerds tease you about? When I was a kid it was Tolkien and Doctor Who (oh but who’s laughing now, friends and neighbors), and as I get older, it’s high fashion. I love it. Yes, upon casual observance it’s overpriced and weirdly geometric, and it’s certainly easy to assume that fashion is a status symbol and nothing else. But to me it’s wearable art, and I observe a couture Alexander McQueen the same way I look at Kirby’s art – I study the lines and the flow and the colors and the movement and I just freaking love it, OK?

So imagine my delight, my total vindication, when I stumbled upon these glorious pieces.

The gowns come from Rodarte, and lest you think this is a gimmick or flash in the pan, the House has more than established itself as a major contender over the years. Rodarte’s first show consisted of only ten pieces, but quickly landed its founders Kate and Laura Mulleavy a meeting with Anna Wintour. And in the fashion industry that’s a really big deal.

Kate and Laura Mulleavy like Star Wars which totally means we are like, BFFs. All joking aside, this collection epitomizes fandom and nerdery for me, in ways that rarely happen when you’re pushing 40. It bridges communities of obsessive fans that seemingly have little in common and tells me that I am not alone. There are others out there that love Star Wars and pretty dresses equally!

You can see the rest of the collection here. I truly love it all, and to bring it all full circle I can honestly tell you that those retro turtlenecks remind of something I would be wearing while rushing to change the channel to PBS to catch Five after school. In the meantime, anybody want to buy a 2008 Kia Rio? I’m fixin’ to buy a new dress.
