‘Star Wars: Episode VII – Avco’

It’s been reported pretty widely that “The Ancient Fear” is the title of the new “Star Wars” film (thanks to Ain’t It Cool News. It’s been reported far less widely (thanks to Bleeding Cool) that “Avco” is the actual working title of the new film and “The Ancient Fear” is nothing short of bunk.

Many have been scratching their heads wondering why in the world Avco would be the working title of the new “Star Wars” film.

Wonder no more.

According to a post on the official Star Wars blog, dated January 29, 2013 (written by everyone’s favorite Bonnie Burton), JJ Abrams recollected to her his first memories of the original film:

“My first Star Wars memory was seeing the words ‘Star Wars‘ in Starlog Magazine and thinking it was a weird title,” Abrams recalls. “I remember seeing an early concept poster by Ralph McQuarrie for the movie. It stuck in my head even though I didn’t know what it was — but it looked important. My second memory is actually seeing it in the theater on opening day in Westwood at Avco Theater and never being the same again.

And now the working title makes perfect sense.

It would be hilarious if the working title were based on the theatre first saw the fourth episode of “Star Wars” in. It was called “The Academy.” Can you imagine the heads exploding if they used a word like that? At that point they’d just be teasing EU fans.

“Episode VII,” whatever it might be called later, will be coming out December 18, 2015.
