In Memoriam: Gerard Parkes

Gerard “Gerry” Parkes, who portrayed the kindly Doc on “Fraggle Rock” died on Sunday. The Irish-Canadian actor was 90.

His role in the beloved show, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, introduced him to an entire generation of children. In each episode, he and his dog Sprocket spent time in his workshop as the Fraggles learned about friendship and the world outside of Fraggle Rock. And though Doc was probably his most recognizable role, he had a career that spanned more than 50 years.

Many may be surprised to learn he also appeared in “The Boondock Saints” (with Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) as a bartender (also named Doc) with Tourette’s syndrome, a role that was a far cry from the gentle inventor on “Fraggle Rock.” In fact, his last credited role was for its 2009 sequel “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.”

Parkes’ agent Gerry Jordan said he “died from natural causes in a Toronto retirement home on Sunday just days after his 90th birthday.”

Farewell, Doc. Dance your cares away, worries for another day. Let the music play, down in Fraggle Rock.
