An incredibly trusted and wise source of Big Shiny Robot!s has consulted his trusted and wise source at the Marvel/Paramount camp about the recent flurry of casting rumours that have plagued the internet in the last week (yes, we’re guilty, too.)
Here is what our good friend had to say:
According to MY studio guy, the rumors about Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill), Ryan McPartlin (Chuck), Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) and other unknowns/television actors reading for Cap are true.
Apparently, when the script came in with World War II sequences (featuring the Invaders), the studio heads decided it was beyond their means to make this movie AND afford A-listers like Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.
Sure sounds like everyone’s high on McPartlin, who evidently just lost out on the Superman role to Brandon Routh.
As for Spidey, the Logan Lerman rumors are just that … rumors. Apparently Sony is waiting for James Vanderbilt’s script to come in (he’s balking on whether Peter Parker is still in school or just out). And they haven’t even come to terms with director Marc Webb yet.
So it seems as though pretty much all the rumours about Cap have been true, and the rumours regarding Spider-Man have been bunk.
In any case, there’s been a lot of news about Captain America coming out of the floodgates from Joe Johnston as well, and his take on the character, the costume, and the story was actually pretty interesting. He said that the classic Cap costume in the film appears because they use Cap as a USO publicity tool, but Steve has that desire to lead and tries to ditch the costume, but realizes the worth of it when he notices that it’s an effective tool as a symbol of leadership. So he begins to shape the costume into something more akin to the present-day Cap costume. It’s a take on the character and the costume I’ve never heard, but I’m actually pretty in love with.
Also, he says the Red Skull is the villain, which isn’t a huge surprise, but interesting to get a confirmation of nonetheless.
In any case, check back here frequently for all the news that’s fit to print!
UPDATE: A lot of sites are running quotes to our piece here and saying “The top three choices for Cap are these guys”. This article says no such thing. These guys read for the part. That’s all our man said. We have no idea who’s at the top of the list, but these three have read for it.

I really like the idea of Ryan McPartlin being Cap. I am an avid Chuck watcher, I think he’d fit the role of Steve Rogers very well. He has the look and he’s not a bad actor at all.

Not this sucky Ackles again! He’s heavily type cast and all I’ve seen him in he always plays the same role. Had to check when his name was being brought up for CA. Looking pained and half-pissed won’t cut it for the big screen.
The guy’s an ex-model and a soap actor with a rabid small fanbase, enough already! Just look at what he’s done acting-wise! It’s all mediocre at best.
Ryan McPartlin is the one if those are the only options.

I’d be thrilled if Ackles got the role. He’s a talented actor and it would be nice to see him do something aside from horror stuff. I know – he did 10 Inch Hero and a few other non-slasher type roles, but I think he’d excel at it here.
I don’t see CMM as a contender though. He just wouldn’t work at all for me. Would need to look more into McPartlin’s work to really make a call on that.

Chuck guy isn’t that good of an actor but you really don’t need anyone deep to make some comics so it’s good for him. I don’t consider CMM as an actor at all and Ackles must do drama not cheap comics movies.

It’s a privilege and an honor to play someone as important to our culture and national drama as Captain America, and the role is too good for him. Not the other way around, Amy.

Dean Winchester, the role he plays now, is beyond type-casting – he’s gone the gamut from slapstick to epic drama within the role and he’s even played multiple roles within the show(like a shapeshifter who took his character’s form, a demon in a dream sequence, there was even an entire episode of him playing himself 5 years in the future, which is not an uncommon trope in sci-fi/fantasy but the whole episode rested on him as he was the main actor and in almost every scene, twice and he was wonderfully nuanced in how he differentiated between the two Deans) and he’s been excellent no matter what they’ve thrown at him.
He also is great at the action sequences and does many, if not most, of his own stunts – including the stuff like getting thrown into walls, etc. He is well beyond “soap-opera” and “ex-model”.

I think people confuse the actor Jensen Ackles with the role he portrays on Supernatural, Dean, and think that he is playing himself. Jensen plays Dean as a bit of a lovable meathead with a lot of humor and a heart of gold. As any fan can tell you, this is far from how Jensen is in real life. For a better idea of what he could bring to the role of Captain America, you should see him as Alec on Dark Angel. You will see that he is far from ‘over the top.’

Ive seen spn, and the acting is not good. i agree with those that think that jensen ackles has an exaggerated style of acting.
I understand spn is a drama, but the gestures and specially the tone of the voice of the character he plays, are not natural. Maybe i am wrong, but i think, his character is supposed to be a normal 30 year old guy, not a “to-be-or-not-to-be” Shakespearean character.

Sure he’s made some questionable choices with regards to film roles- but hey, he has bills to pay like the rest of us mere mortals, but he is still a talented actor.
His portrayal of Dean outstanding, and he has taken what could be a cliche genre role and made it something extra ordinary. Scenes and plots that are so outlandish that in the hands of lesser actors would have seemed ridiculous are rendered poignant and memorable.
He made me care about Dean and let me tell you it takes more than a pretty face to win me over. I hope he’s in with a chance at this role, I’d love to see him get the recognition he deserves as an actor.

I have to partially agree with Rob.
In the beginning Jensens, and also Jareds, acting was over the top and it made me tune out, but they improved like i’ve never seen someone improve their acting.
Like Nicky 69 said, Jensens portrayal of Dean is outstanding.
Agreed… MBV and especialy Devour were realy bad, but thats why i want to see him in something else than a Horror movie.
Jensen Ackles grew with every episode of Supernatural, thats why i think he deserves the opportunity to prove that he can do more than be a tv-actor.

I think that Ackles would be great in the role. He is known for turning crappy writing into pure gold. He is charismatic, nuanced and adds depth to roles that on paper look cliche’ or one dementional. One critic once said that , “Ackles can express more with one look than most actors can with several pages of dialog.”

Dear Ackles fangirls – he *is* a cliche on his current show. He has like three facial expressions and his acting is stiff and not very nuanced (despite the fact that you all sing his praise). He doesn’t even use his voice or body when he’s *acting*, he just makes faces and is very concerned with looking pretty all the time. And wow, the CW is sure to zoom in on him constantly. It’s ridiculous.
He may be good looking enough to star in teensy CW-series made for girls, but don’t even call him a good actor.
And he is too old if there are sequels planned. But I doubt CA will be a hit with him cast, it’ll probably go straight to DVD.

BTW! How could u call Ackles’ job cliche!? He’s doing great as a tv actor!! I think he shows his talent in dark angel and now in supernatural! just Compare him with some other TV guys(and not movie stars)! I think if he had chance to play in a good movie with a great script he would make it super!
