UPDATED: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Teaser Trailer!

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011 at 10:43 am Category: Comics, Marvel, Movies, Previews, Spider-Man, Top, Trailers, Video

It’s been really super-crazy the way comic book movie teasers have been leaking the last few days, hasn’t it? Well, we’ve got another one for you today, I’m not sure which movie this trailer is attached to (one would assume Captain America), but it’s pretty long for a first trailer, clocking in at about two and a half minutes. Have a look at the muffled, slightly shaky footage and I’ll share some thoughts after ward.

So, the first obvious thought is: Really? You’re going to tell the origin again? Why? the Raimi movies aren’t that old, everyone and his uncle knows how Spidey got his abilities. If they’re tying it into Curt Connor’s story, or to explain mechanical web-shooters I guess it’s justified, but it shouldn’t take more than 5-10 minutes tops.

Also, we’re actually going to get a glimpse into Peter’s parents? That’s pretty cool. Too bad that Spider-Man is kind of off to the side with other Marvel movies, because using the “Red Skull killed Richard and Mary Parker” would be a cool way to tie them together.

Gwen is brainy Gwen. That’s cool, I suppose.

I know Spider-Man can be a brooding character, but he can also be fun-loving and bombastic. The Raimi movies barely had the type of Spidey-brand humor that I’m talking about, and it seems this one is going to follow suit.

The end sequence is admittedly cool. It’s like an FPS (First-Person-Spidey)! It also is a good way to convey Spider-Man’s moveset without the CGI looking super-fake.

The bottom line of course is that I love Spider-Man and I’ll watch this movie regardless of the quality, but if anything else, I am more cautiously optimistic rather than gung-ho over this movie now.  Who knows? Maybe when it’s officially released, it’ll wow me a bit more. Until then though…

UPDATE: Of course we’ve got the officially released trailer now.

So I loved everything about this!

I am definitely one of those that are a bit more gung-ho about it. I really like the cast they put together, and I think Marc Webb seems to be pretty passionate about this project, so hopefully that passion will lead to a good quality film.

I like the darker, more serious tone of the film, because for me it translates to a more “real world” feel for some reason. I’m sure we will see a bit of Spidey’s humor come out in this film, but I would imagine that will probably come out more in the inevitable sequel – after he’s been Spider-Man for a while and comfortable with that role.

I’m not super thrilled about a retelling of the origin story, but it looks like they are trying to freshen it up with including his parents a bit, so I am open minded to it.

Finally, LOVED the FPS shots at the end! SO. DAMN. AWESOME. Can’t wait to see this in front of Captain America this weekend! ZOMG!

I think this will probably be pretty good. It looks like they are Ultimate-izing the origin, with the bit about Peter’s dad leaving behind some sciencey-gizmos that will be useful to Peter as Spidey (always liked that).

If they are going to tell the origin, I hope they change it up a bit. Obviously Uncle Ben still has to die and say his last words, and Peter still needs to feel responsible for it, but the rest is negotiable. Tying his death in with the movie’s big bad (The Lizard, right?), for example, would elevate the stakes. And fan boys can’t be too upset, since we already saw a pretty reverent depiction of the comic book origin back in 2001.

(not being a dick, to each their own opinion, I genuinely would like to know what about this teaser doesn’t tickle your Spidey Sense)

It just looks waaaaay too dark and brooding. And another origin story feels like it’s going to be tedious.

I dunno… Spidey, for me, at his best is… fun. This just looks… yeah… brooding. Not my kind of spidey. I’m sure it’ll be fine, but it doesn’t look fun.

I actually hate the FPS shots at the end. It reminds me of Doom.

I’m not sure how I feel about this.

I agree with Bryan. Too dark and brooding.

I’m not sure this is going to be good. But, to be fair, I can’t judge the film on the teaser alone.

I just can’t get excited about the movie based on this teaser.

I mean, I like angsty Spider-Man. Angsty is fine. Brooding is what I don’t like. This isn’t angsty. This is dark and brooding.

I’ll go see this movie, because like most comic book fans I’ll see anything comic book related, but I can’t say I’m excited or looking forward to seeing this at all…
But I was the same way with X-Men: First Class and I loved that movie…

i’m with Swank. Although i’m looking forward to a less cheesy approach to the franchise, i don’t want mopey Twilight-Spidey either. Let’s hope the tone of the trailer is not fully depicting the tone of the whole film. And i hope they don’t really use that fps shot in the movie because it looked more fake than anything Raimi ever did.

I dont like it. Spider-Man is one of the characters whos name, powers, and origin story we are practicaly born with the knowledge of. Why do I want to pay to see a story that is just going to be told again a few years down the road when this franchise gets relaunched again? And the CGI is not that great, Mark hit the nail on the head with the DOOM remark, it looks like a cut scene from a video game. I will torrent this movie but there is no way in hell that they are getting my 12 bucks for this crap. The only positive thing I can say about it is I like the mask.

Clobber-Tron on July 19th, 2011 at 11:56 am said:

well Davey, if you will ‘torrent’ it but not pay to see it YOU are the problem. Asshole.

What are you guys talking about? It’s a Spidey movie, we’ll all go see it and not all of us will like it just like every other comic book movie out there. There’re geeks who didn’t like Thor and there are some that didn’t like X-men first class but but most of them saw them anyway…

It seems like the author of this article is confused, this movie is a reboot so obviously they’re going to tell an origin story. Also, I don’t see why there’s negativity about this film, after the piece of shit that was Spider-Man 3, a reboot was necessary. Plus, Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen and Rhys Ifan are all top-notch actors that are much better than most of the actors in the original series. Not to mention, the comic continuity is much better.

Kozzmo on July 19th, 2011 at 12:26 pm said:

So, alot of people are kinda bashing this thing because of the ominous or “brooding” feel, and the CGI. One, It was a screen shot, so maybe the actual trailer won’t seem that dark if seen in a real theater, or even on TV. Plus, trailers can take on a feeling of their own, depending on what the editing team wishes to portray at that time. Two, did you see the release date? It’s almost a year from now… What do you think is going to happen in that time? If you said “CGI crap” you would be correct. This may just be a preliminary “let’s get the trailer out for the Cap movie” quickly-done job, with intentions of perfecting the CGI feel over the next 11 & 1/2 months. So, I wouldn’t discount it just yet. Garfield is actually a good actor, and he seems to have done his homework sufficiently for this role, and I think Webb is gonna take this exactly where it needs to go. Be optimistic, people!

funny how people are judging the movie already…based off a teaser. Maybe the CG looks bad because its not done yet? C’mon tho…torrenting it because the teaser looks lame? thats a Richard comment. I think it looks awesome…got me way more amped than the DKR teaser…

For the record, I (the author) am not confused. I just can’t see the point of retelling the origin when the Raimi movies are still fresh in the public’s minds. Everyone knows who Spider-Man is and how he came to be. Why waste precious run time on it again?

Also, just for the record, I know the article seems like it, but I am still very much looking forward to this, I’m just not in “OMG I have to see it noooooww” mode like I was when it was announced.

I just want to say that at first I didn’t like the last FPS sequence, ‘Mark’ is right, it’s very reminiscent of crappy movies like Doom, and even reminded me of the game ‘Mirror’s Edge’.

But then I realised that this film is being shot entirely in 3D. I think there will be a few people’s stomach’s going at the part where he jumps off the building and starts freefalling before shooting off a web! Anyone who has been on the Spiderman ride @ Universal will understand! I assume what the director is trying to do is give a sense of what it’s like to be Spiderman. Now I can’t wait!

Also, read this interview with the director:

http://rant.to/n2YI5X

Makes me feel so much more confident about the direction of the film.

Honestly im going to go see it, because im hoping this time the heroes and villians of this franchise will be fleshed out to what we all knew them as, unlike the other films. I’m optimistic, but not sold on it. And yes, this is all unfinished work, a few scenes and a lil CGI popped in there from his perspective, not too bad, I dont wanna see multiple scenes of that though, lol.

goodfernuthin on July 19th, 2011 at 12:54 pm said:

Love me some dark brooding and possibly angry Spiderman. One of my favorite story arcs involves spidey donning the black suit and breaking into prison to fuck up the kingpin. I love the shit talkin’ spidey too, but if he’s a teenager again, I think rage and angst is to be expected.

avatar
Swank-mo-tron on July 19th, 2011 at 1:24 pm said:

Yeah, like I said, I’m fine with angst. This is dark, brooding, Batman level terror and darkness. Spider-man is full of angst, but fun. Even at his lowest in his life, he’s still cracking jokes in the costume.

avatar
Shaz-Bot on July 19th, 2011 at 1:29 pm said:

Agreed. For Peter, Spider-Man can be as much of an escape as it can be a curse. Sure, people around him die. A lot., But it (the costume) enables an introverted teen to cut loose and be who he wants to be. It’s kind of like what internet anonymity does for people these days.

to anyone who is happy that they are rebooting, but are complaining about them retelling the origin:

they have to tell the origin in order to do a reboot. they have to show what events inspire THIS particular spiderman. how crappy of a movie would it be if it just started with him already as spiderman with no beginning to the whole new series? the characters would be flat and we would feel no sympathy towards the hero. if they are doing a reboot they have to do the origin…. otherwise its a film with no beginning.

avatar
Swank-mo-tron on July 19th, 2011 at 1:39 pm said:

They don’t HAVE to retell the origin.

That’s like saying at the beginning of every new team on the comic they have to retell it. That’s like saying they need to retell the origin of James Bond every time a new actor is cast… Hell, of 22 Bond films we only got the Origin ONCE! The 21st time!

I’m tired of the origin and EVERY ONE knows it. Just skip it already.

Parabolee on July 19th, 2011 at 1:49 pm said:

Really unhappy about this movie. As a very big Spider-Man fan (own 100′s of issue’s), I feel this movie is very disrespectful of the source material. I could write paragraphs on what is wrong with this trailer as far as how it relates to the original comics, but for those that don’t care about being faithful and want to love it, it will fall on deaf ears.

I really want to love this movie, and I’m very happy with the cast (except Leary as Capt. Stacy). But as far as I am concerned, if you change the core of who Peter Parker is, to the point he might as well be someone else, it’s no longer Spider-Man. And Peter wasn’t a hipster (the hair & the skateboard).

From what I have seen so far, if Sony didn’t have the Spidey license, they could change the characters names and the costumes colours, and call the movie “The Stunning Bug-Boy”; Marvel wouldn’t even have grounds for suing on the basis of intellectual property infringement.

punyparker01 on July 19th, 2011 at 2:18 pm said:

I agree with Shaz-Bot and jerstin21. As to why this Peter Parker is a “hipster”? They’re just trying to bring the original Spider-Man continuity to the year 2011. I mean, how the heck would you have a lonely teen with no parents and no friends dress? And don’t tell me you want him to dress like they did in the 70′s. Peter is supposed to be sort of an outcast. I think the long sleeves, hoods, dark colors, and messy hair really show alone Peter is. Honestly, I wouldn’t have him dress any other way. I would lose the skateboard, though.

Hate to break it to you guys, but wearing a hoodie, long sleeves and dark clothes DOESN’T make you look like an “outcast.” It just makes you look like every OTHER “hip” teenager walking around. THAT’S why Peter looks like a “hipster.” He looks like the average “cool” kid trying to convince the world how misunderstood he is, as he skateboards to pick up his latte.

And yeah, this movie looks weak. Costume’s horrible (silver booties on Spider-Man?), it’s too soon while the Raimi movies are still fresh in our minds and generally comes across as an easy bid to get audiences’ money.

I’ll probably torrent it, as well, rather than waste my hard-earned cash on it. That’s not MY problem, that’s the STUDIO’S problem. Put out a decent film worth watching (and promos to go with it) and I’ll pay money to see it. That’s why I’m seeing Captain America. I’m not wasting my money on silly Hoodie Twilight Spidey wearing silver ballet shoes. Feel free to, if you like…

Im a little bit in between. I want to be excited I want to thank god for answering all 4,327 of my prayers I prayed throughout spidey 3, and it all LOOKS like maybe they’ll get it right this time, but my heart has been broken by Marvel too many times. They continue to fuck over their Poster boy, the hand that feeds them, and I just cant get my hopes up. The CGI was like a fucking video game, yes. But necessary I guess. I like Andy I dont want this to be a movie directed at the teen stereotype. I want them to hop off the Dark Knights Nuts. And pull the brooding back a little. When I think spidey I dont think Dark and brooding. Sorry. Call me craZy. Im gonna treat this movie like a piece of shit until its end credits flash before my eyes.
