EVENT: The Phantom Menace

For many of us, The Phantom Menace holds a lot of fond memories and this week’s 3D release of the film is a welcome one.

I, for one, am grateful for the chance to show the entire saga to my kids on the big screen. They were only barely old enough to catch Revenge of the Sith on the big screen (at about the same age I was when I saw Return of the Jedi the first time) and this will give me opportunity to let them experience Star Wars as it’s meant to be: on the big screen. I’m sure I’ll catch as many 2D screenings as 3D during this release.

My City Weekly column this week delves into more detail about Phantom Menace and my continued love for it.

For those of you who are in the Salt Lake area, we’re are, in part, hosting a kick off event for Thursday night’s midnight screening that you won’t want to miss.

Starting at 10pm on Thursday, February 9th, we will be packing the theatre for the midnight showing of The Phantom Menace at Jordan Commons. (9400 South State Street, Sandy, UT)

The local 501st and the Mandalorian Mercs will be on hand to take pictures with the crowd. There will be a costume contest hosted by Jeff and Jimmy from The Big Movie Mouth-Off and then I will be hosting a trivia contest afterward. Dr. Volt’s Comic Connection and Megaplex will be giving away prizes.

This is the place to be for the midnight showing in Utah, packed with those who love these movies the most. I would recommend getting tickets now.

If you’re not in Utah, what are you doing for the midnight event?

The RyTime! Geekcast will be there with you guys for the midnight showing! I can’t wait! It’s going to be awesome! Have you guys heard any word on if this is going to be offered in IMAX at any point or in the D-Box theater at The District?

Alright, lemme just say that I have given these frakkin IDJITS behind the whole 3D resurgence a chance. They have blown every chance they have been given.

They say that they don’t want to use it as a “gimmick” and scare the people with things flying into their faces.

BUT 3D IS A GIMMICK!

If things are NOT popping into your face making you lean back into your seat to get away from them, there is NO POINT to bothering to film in or “convert” any movie to 3D.

Every time I have read reviews of 3D films, be they filmed with 3D cameras or “converted” in post, I am ashamed for the reviewer when I visit the theatre and wonder where these “eye-popping” or “amazing” 3D effects have gone.

Only about three (3) total films have actually had any significant use of 3D in all of the films I have seen in the past 5 years.

AVATAR
Final Destination (4 and 5 both did great)
Hugo

Those three (or four, if you count TFD films as two) have truly amazing and well-cinematogrified camerawork in their films, which is used to exacting effect with the 3D technology. No other film I have seen in “3D” – even those filmed using the 3D cameras – has even had much more than a “depth” of background added.

The whole point of filming in or “converting” a film to 3D is to HAVE THINGS FLY AT THE AUDIENCE!

If you do not have anything in the film which POPS OUT at the viewer, forget the gimmick and call it 2D and stop charging us extra for dark versions of the film!

I enjoy your steadfast support of the SW saga. To be totally honest, I do think you’re a bit of an apologist and tend to gloss over the substantial mistakes that Lucas has made over the last few years, but overall I think your take in this article is perfect.

I love the SW saga. Does some of it suck? Unfortunately, yes. But overall it’s awesome and has brought a lot of joy to generations of viewers. Nothing is perfect. Seems strange that so many people want to dwell on the negatives when there are so many positives. I do think it’s only intellectually honest to acknowledge the mistakes though.

I’m no fan of Jar Jar and I hate that “Ani” was cast so young. Having said that, who freaking cares? I loved waiting in line for TPM in 1999 and watching the midnight showing in a theater full of SW maniacs running around waving their lightsabers. It’s one of the fondest memories I have and I’ll definitely be watching TPM in 3D this weekend.

Keep up the good work!
