Poor Sam Raimi. He finally gets back to his horror film roots with his new movie, Drag Me to Hell, and all people want to ask him about is Spider-Man 4. Yesterday, MTV talked to Sam and specifically asked about Kirsten Dunst returning as Mary Jane Watson for the fourth pic. Here’s what Raimi had to say on the matter:
“Kirsten? I have talked with her, and she’s very excited about the possibility of it,” Raimi revealed, insisting that although Dunst is willing, it will be the director’s call to make after he reads the script by Lindsay-Abaire. “I think I’m going to have to read the screenplay and make sure everything we’ve talked about is working, before I could honestly tell you absolutely how [Dunst’s possible return] would go.”
I for one have never liked Dunst as MJ. She just didn’t seem to fit the part. I am comfortable in saying this because my shallowness knows no depth: She wasn’t attractive enough. To me, and as far as the comics go, MJ seemed to be the girl next door who just happened to have the supermodel good looks. Maybe I am alone on that one… But also, her acting left something to be desired, especially in the third one.
In digging for a little more information about this, I found that a lot of fans would love to see semi-Utah-native Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who will be co-starring in the upcoming Scott Pilgrim film) cast as MJ. All over news message boards her name popped up saying she should have been cast as MJ from start – though, I don’t recall her ever being in the running for the part. I think she has the look, don’t recall her in many of the films she’s been in (Final Destinations 1 & 3, Sky High), but I doubt MJ will be recast because frankly, what has Kristen Dunst been up to lately? Doesn’t seem like a whole lot.
Besides, I don’t think I would like to see MJ recase necessarily, because while I don’t like Kirsten as MJ, she’s spent 3 movies portraying her so she kind of is Mary Jane in the movie canon. With that said, I don’t see why they couldn’t just write her out of the next few movies, it wouldn’t be hard, just a simple cameo in number 4 of her leaving to LA to pursue her modeling/acting career and BAM! She’s gone. Leaving the door open for what I think would be a good romance between Gwen and Peter. I mean, come on, you can’t introdcue Gwen Stacy and NOT have her and Pete dabble in a little romance, and with MJ out of movies 4 & 5 you could really develop that just in time to see her demise and then I guess the return of MJ. After that long of an absence it would probably THEN be easier to recast her to come back late in the 5th or 6th installments.
Just my thoughts, I will turn my fanboy wishful thinking switch off now.

I’d love to see them get rid of Dunst. She’s absolutely horrible and not attractive. Winstead could work. She’s definitely about 1000000x sexier than Dunst. Hopefully a better actress. I guess we’ll find out next year when we see her as Ramona.

You know, in hindsight, Kirsten Dunst would have made a better Gwen Stacy and Bryce Dallas Howard would have made a much better Mary Jane… Too late for that shit to happen now.
Though, I’m not so sure how I’d feel about Mary Elizabeth Winstead taking on MJ…

She works for me. I’d prefer to keep her than to recast her.

Dunst works as Mary Jane in so many ways. Feisty, down to earth, and fairly hot.
Bryce… looks like her face is painted on. (Sorry guys, but its true)
This other girl, as Arse mentioned, I have never seen her give a performance that I remember at all even though I’ve seen almost all movies she has been cast in. I’m not even that much of a fan of Dunst, but I know she earns her paycheck (tho I think SM3 was Raimi’s fault not Dunst); I cannot attest to the others mentioned.
Just sayin’

I’ve spoke pretty openly with all the ‘bots on this site about Kirsten Dunst. They need to write her out, ship her out to LA.
Lizard as the “villain” for the next movie. They can introduce Kraven the Hunter and Felicia Harding to keep with the feral theme.
This could also open up the opportunity for Peter to juggle a few girls (Betty Brant, Felicia and Gwen) which is also a classic scenario for our web slinger.

So Gwen is still alive in the movie universe?
I would love to see Black Cat; who would you cast as Felicia?
Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Natalie Portman.

Natalie Portman would look RIDICULOUS in that suit. She has ZERO curves. She may be cute as hell, but she’s no latex-wearing vixen.
Evan Rachel Wood? She has a dangerous and sultry side that could easily come out to temp old Peter. Plus, she can actually act (not a slam against Swank’s “righty-time” wife).

Why not Mary Elizabeth Winstead? That would be a reasonable way to get her into the movies. They made Keira Knightley look like she had cleavage in those shitty Pirate movies…

Yeah, but I just love her currently cause of Scott Pilgrim and didn’t want to jump on that band wagon.
Plus, there’s always a need for someone to say “Just cause Natalie Portman was in Star Wars, doesn’t mean she’s good for everything, Swank.” Which of course is soon followed up by, “I liked her in ‘The Professional’, too.” Yeah, I ain’t buyin’ into that hoodwink. Swank likes her cause of Star Wars. Next, he’ll recommend Keira Knightley. Look on her imdb and you’ll see why.

Watch Garden State and you’ll like her too.
Did you see Live Free Die Hard? Winstead was awesome in that as a “take no shit” female role. She was John McClane’s daught for God’s sake.

I liked Dunst in the first movie. She was plenty fine looking enough – particularly in that little chinese number she wore – but she was merely adequate in the second film, and maybe it was just me, but it felt like she didn’t really want to be there in the third one. Also (Shallow alert!) I think she’s looking a bit long in the tooth.
I think they should just re-cast her. No big deal. I mean, how many people have played James Bond? How many people have played Felix Leiter for gosh sakes? Only David Hedison ever did that character twice.
Shouldn’t be a problem. Just say “She’s off on a touring production of “Our American Cousin” or something for movie #4, and then introduce a new actress in #5.
Cake!

I don’t like Natalie Portman just because of Star Wars.
And I liked her before Star Wars, not just because of the Professional though. Mars Attacks and Heat, anyone?
She’s also proved excellent in films like Cold Mountain and Closer…
So, the next person who says I only like Natalie Portman because of Star Wars can kiss my ass because of their un-erring ignorance, arrogance, and hubris.

I agree with you, Republibot3.0. She was great in the first movie, but got worse as the sequels came. As good as Maguire is, I’d be very interested for a new Parker and MJ.

Me thinks Swank doth protest too much.

Seriously, who are you trying to convince here Swank?
I thought she was great in SP2, but I agree with SP3. “when is this over” was the message scralled on her face; again tho, I’m gonna blame Raimi and/or the screenwriter for a horrible script that could only produce those looks and nothing else.

You’ll get your wish, Kill. Sony keeps the option as long as they’re making movies. We should be grateful Sam Raimi has been able to keep it together. This will be their next Bond series. We’ll be talking about who’s the best Spider-Man the same way we do about James Bond’s…

It’s a sad fact of the industry that actresses have far shorter careers than actors. In addition to “Who’s the next Bond” we’ll be asking “Who’s the next Mary Jane” a lot more often. Perhaps they could do it like Felix Leiter in the Bond movies, where the same person never plays her twice from here on out?
