The The Dark Knight being the monstrous success that it has been, everyone has just kind of assumed that director Chris Nolan would definitely be back for a third go-around. There have been all sorts of reports from since before TDK even came out that if the story was right and fit the canon, then Nolan would be back. However, Batman-On-Film is reporting that a contact who “works in the business behind the camera” thinks that this may not be such a given:
The death of Heath Ledger in January of 2008 rocked Mr. Nolan hard. So hard that Chris was convinced that TDK was going to be it for him and Batman on film.
The Joker was going to return in BATMAN 3.
“You are correct in reporting that he is developing story ideas with [Jonathan Nolan] and [David Goyer] , but it will be until AT LEAST 2012 before we see the Caped Crusader back [in theaters]. And that is only an EARLY ESTIMATE at best right now. They are even saying it might not be until 2013.”
Basically, the BATMAN film franchise is back to square one. As far as a story or a BATMAN 3, “Right now, there is none,” says our guy.
I think everyone wants Nolan to return, but I doubt we will hear anything set in stone until after he has wrapped on his latest huge under-taking, Inception. So, if Nolan were to drag his feet committing to another Batman film, would everyone be willing to wait until supposedly 2013?! Or does WB take its chances with another director with the same writing team?
Or, of course, there is the possibility that this is just all a bunch of bullshit.

The dark horse here might be how successful the next two Harry Potter films are. If they under perform and the studio needs a hit they’ll push for a 2011 date for Batman which will most likely mean Nolan won’t be back.

I really don’t think its possible for those Harry Potter films to under perform, Ryan…

I agree. I think Ryan has a completely valid point, but the likelihood of these last Potter films flopping even a little are slim to none.

I find this reasonable.
I mean they hit the mark in TDK.
And anything else, would just be less.
I think if the studio strayed from the feel of what Nolan made by keeping Batman grounded and real, they would be committing suicide, but I also don’t have much faith in the creative intelligence of the studio heads

From what I know, way back when Batman Begins was done, there was an outline for three movies. The outline info I read talked about Joker being in part two (The Dark Knight) and Harvey Dent being DA in the same film, being scarred (by the Joker)near the end of TDK or beginning of part three. From the same outline, it was to set up three with more “gimmick” criminals popping up around Gotham (much like “The Long Halloween”) due to the vacuum left with all the mob bosses gone. Joker was to play an large part of three, acting as a “Hannibal Lector” type in Arkham, as Batman uses him as insight to Gotham’s new breed of criminal.
I’d imagine with Heath Ledger’s death, it changed any plans they may have had, both in story and the impact of . I’m still of the mind that recasting should be in order, as the actor is not more important than the character/ role, though it may sound insensitive and heretic.

They can recast him.
Problem solved.
