From what I know, way back when Batman Begins was done, there was an outline for three movies. The outline info I read talked about Joker being in part two (The Dark Knight) and Harvey Dent being DA in the same film, being scarred (by the Joker)near the end of TDK or beginning of part three. From the same outline, it was to set up three with more "gimmick" criminals popping up around Gotham (much like "The Long Halloween") due to the vacuum left with all the mob bosses gone. Joker was to play an large part of three, acting as a "Hannibal Lector" type in Arkham, as Batman uses him as insight to Gotham's new breed of criminal.

I'd imagine with Heath Ledger's death, it changed any plans they may have had, both in story and the impact of . I'm still of the mind that recasting should be in order, as the actor is not more important than the character/ role, though it may sound insensitive and heretic.

I find this reasonable.

I mean they hit the mark in TDK.
And anything else, would just be less.

I think if the studio strayed from the feel of what Nolan made by keeping Batman grounded and real, they would be committing suicide, but I also don't have much faith in the creative intelligence of the studio heads

I agree. I think Ryan has a completely valid point, but the likelihood of these last Potter films flopping even a little are slim to none.

The dark horse here might be how successful the next two Harry Potter films are. If they under perform and the studio needs a hit they'll push for a 2011 date for Batman which will most likely mean Nolan won't be back.
