Out Today on DVD 7/7/2009

Knowing is my first recommendation this week and I insist you give this film a look. From director Alex Proyas whose films are always worth watching or craft and technique, Knowing is a compelling piece of science fiction. You should read Dr. Cyborg’s original review of the film here if I’ve been unconvincing. But seriously: trust me, all the bad stuff you heard about this film was completely false.

They’re re-releasing the classic war film Grave of the Fireflies as well today. Roger Ebert once said that this film belongs any list of great war films and I think he’s right. Sure it’s a cartoon. Hell, it’s even a Japanese cartoon. But if you don’t cry during this movie, you’re a robot. Well, the kind that isn’t programmed to cry anyway.

Kirk Douglas and Walter Matthau star in Lonely are the Brave. I’ve never seen this western, but the premise sounds great and I love Walter Matthau in more serious roles.

The last thing I’ll mention today is the History Channel’s The Universe: The Complete Season Two. This series explores the science of the universe in Blu-ray. Expect a review soon.

Lonely Are The Brave is based on a book by Edward Abbey called The Brave Cowboy. Its a damn good book and I’ve heard the movie is decent.
